Fyodor Otsep - Zhivoy trup [The Living Corpse] (1929)

The film tells the story of Fyodor Protasov, played by the great Soviet director Vsevolod Pudovkin, who after learning that his wife has an affair with another man, decides to grant her the divorce thus putting an end to an unhappy marriage and enable her to remarry her lover. However, the Orthodox Church refuses to grant a divorce except for three exceptions, one of which was the death of one spouse. So the husband simulates his own suicide and becomes a living corpse.
