British singer/songwriter James Blunt has stormed the music charts all over the world with his beautifully crafted album Back to Bedlam. The multi-platinum selling collection of melodic ballads, including the modern classic You're Beautiful has propelled Blunt to stardom in an incredibly short space of time. On 18th November 2005, James performed live for an intimate audience at the BBC in London and the result was this wonderfully atmospheric concert, featuring a full band plus an eight piece string section. Filmed in HD and airing on the BBC in December, the show features all the hits from Back to Bedlam, including High, You're Beautiful, and an acoustic version of Goodbye My Lover.



The venue was hot, sticky and smoky. We waited until 9.15pm for James Blunt to grace the stage and it was well worth the uncomfortable conditions.



Looking scruffy in a American Football Style t-shirt he smiled at the audience shyly, waved and launched into Billy from the album which nearly everyone has a copy of, the fabulous Back to Bedlam.



We were treated to new material spread out across the set. Judging by the quality and the feedback he got from the audience his next album is not going to disappoint.



I was amazed by the power of his voice. Its so different to anything you have ever heard before. When he sings people listen as if under a spell. A mixture between Bob Dylan, Damien Rice and David Gray is probably the best way to describe this unique talent.



The highlight of the evening, (well at least mine) was the back to back performances of what I think are the two best songs on the album. The first he took to the piano and the mood turned sombre as he sang the haunting, yet beautiful Goodbye my Lover.



The whole audience were mesmerised and we all sang along at the top of our voices as lighters were raised. He followed that up with the stunning Tears and Rain.



Never have I been to an all standing concert, where no one moved. As soon as he walked on that stage, no one went to get a beer or have a break. Our eyes were firmly fixed on Mr Blunt.



He sang every song from Back to Bedlam, an album which tells stories of lost and found love, life and even war from his time spent as a solider.



The Academy, although it could do with a revamp is a fantastic place to hear live music. Its small and intimate and the sound quality is fabulous.



The talent of this man is amazing. He can write unbelievably great songs, play the guitar, the piano and boy can he sing!



The final song was no surprise, as the guitar strings sounded to the familiarity of Youre Beautiful the audience screamed with delight and sang so loudly he let us take over in parts!



In his posh accent he thanked us all for coming, but it should be us that are thankful for such a great singer-songwriter that exists in todays music world.
