Beyond the wall, Bran Stark has been training with the Three-Eyed Raven, learning to use his powers to view the past. Bran witnesses visions of Ned and Howland Reed, and of the Children of the Forest. The Night King and the White Walkers launch an attack on the Three-Eyed Raven's cave, but Bran and Meera manage to escape. They are rescued by Bran's uncle, Benjen Stark. Following their escape from Winterfell, Sansa Stark and Theon Greyjoy are rescued by Brienne of Tarth. Sansa, Brienne, and Podrick Payne journey on to the Wall, while Theon returns to the Iron Islands. Following the death of Balon Greyjoy, Theon supports his sister's claim at the Kingsmoot. However, their uncle Euron Greyjoy is named king after declaring that he will seduce Daenerys Targaryen and conquer Westeros. Theon and Yara flee, intending to form an alliance with Daenerys before Euron. In Winterfell, Ramsay Bolton's status as heir to the North is threatened by Sansa's escape, prompting him to kill Roose and Walda Bolton and his new-born half-brother to secure his position. Harald Karstark and Smalljon Umber arrive at Winterfell to pledge their loyalty, also presenting Ramsay with Osha and Rickon Stark. At the Wall, Melisandre successfully resurrects Jon Snow. After executing the mutineers, Jon leaves the Night's Watch. Sansa arrives at the Wall, and after Ramsay sends a letter to Castle Black threatening the Starks and Wildlings, Jon decides to gather Stark loyalists to fight. Jon and Sansa are only able to secure the allegiance of a few houses. As the Stark army marches on Winterfell, Ramsay kills Rickon. A massive battle ensues which nearly obliterates the Stark forces, before the knights of the Vale, commanded by Petyr Baelish, arrive and defeat the Boltons. Ramsay is captured, and Sansa has him fed to his hounds. Having been captured by Khal Moro, Daenerys Targaryen is brought to Vaes Dothrak to live out her days with the Dosh Khaleen. When the khals gather to determine Daenerys' fate, she sets fire to the Temple of the Dosh Khaleen, killing the khals but emerging unburnt. Jorah Mormont leaves to find a cure for his greyscale, while Daenerys marches on Meereen with the Dothraki. Along the march, Daenerys rides Drogon, and declares that they will sail to Westeros. In Meereen, Varys discovers that the Sons of the Harpy are financed by the masters of Astapor and Yunkai, who have reclaimed the cities from the freedmen, as well as the slavers of Volantis. Tyrion Lannister makes an agreement with the slavers that gives them seven years to transition from slavery, but they renege on the agreement and launch a naval attack on Meereen. Daenerys returns and has her dragons burn the fleet, forcing the slavers to accept the original agreement, while Daario Naharis and the Dothraki defeat the Sons of the Harpy. Theon and Yara Greyjoy arrive in Meereen soon after and form an alliance with Daenerys. Jaime Lannister returns to King's Landing with Myrcella Baratheon's corpse. The High Sparrow refuses to let Tommen visit Margaery in prison or Cersei Lannister attend Myrcella's funeral. Jaime and the Tyrell army attempt to liberate Margaery and Loras, only to find Margaery has become a follower of the High Sparrow and Tommen has forged an alliance with the Faith Militant. Tommen relieves Jaime from the Kingsguard, sending him to Riverrun to assist House Frey in reclaiming it from Brynden "Blackfish" Tully. Cersei names the reanimated Gregor Clegane to defend her in her trial by combat; however, Tommen abolishes trial by combat, replacing it with trial by the Faith. At Riverrun, Jaime finds that the Blackfish is determined to not surrender the castle and is willing to wait out a siege, despite Brienne's attempts to persuade him to come north and fight the Boltons. Jaime forces Edmure Tully, held captive by the Freys, to order the Tully forces to surrender. Brienne and Podrick flee, while the Blackfish dies fighting the Lannisters. In the Riverlands, Sandor "The Hound" Clegane is revealed to have survived his wounds. After his village is wiped out by outlaws affiliated with the Brotherhood Without Banners, the Hound pursues the Brotherhood. He kills some of the outlaws and encounters Lord Beric Dondarrion and Thoros of Myr executing the others. Beric asks the Hound to join the Brotherhood in their journey north to fight the White Walkers. After Doran Martell receives word of Myrcella's death, Ellaria Sand kills him and seizes control of Dorne, with the Sand Snakes also killing his heir Trystane. After spending time begging on the streets of Braavos while blind, Arya resumes her training with the Faceless Men and her vision is restored after she is able to convince Jaqen H'ghar that she is "no one" repeatedly. She is given the task of assassinating an actress, but instead saves the actress and warns her of the assassination. The Waif is ordered to kill Arya for her disobedience. Arya is grievously wounded by the Waif, but lures her into the catacombs beneath Braavos and uses her experience fighting while blind to kill the Waif. Asserting her identity as a Stark, Arya decides to return to Westeros. On their way to Oldtown, Sam Tarly, Gilly, and Little Sam visit House Tarly's seat of Horn Hill. Sam's father Randyll allows Gilly and Little Sam to stay at Horn Hill, but his bigotry towards Gilly after learning of her Wildling heritage prompts Sam to take them with him to the Citadel instead, along with House Tarly's ancestral Valyrian steel sword Heartsbane.
