Radio dramatisation of the classic Victoria crime thriller.

The play begins in the rather terrifying darkness of the late afternoon-the foggy hour, as it were, before the dawn of gaslight and tea. The scene is a living-room on the first floor of a four storied house in a gloomy and unfashionable quarter of London in the latter part of the 19th century.

Bella's husband leaves every evening for his club. But soon after he has left, the gaslight goes down, as if somebody else was in the house, using another light. Then Bella receives a visitor from a stranger.......
