The main goal of this chapter is to introduce what a functional variable is, and
how a functional regression model can be defined for the problems connected
with a functional response variable.We give a brief overview of different functional
regression models although the focus is on introducing the main idea
of the Gaussian process regression model. Several examples of functional data
with their associated statistical problems are also provided in this chapter
