Here’s what I do know about the “Greg & Joey” tape. Back in the late 90’s, I was a somewhat prolific collector of gay porno tapes, trading with horny perverts across the USA, swapping the latest underground and vintage titles that made their way into the bootleg circles. (Nine Inch Nails’ first “viral video,” a staged “snuff film” called “Broken,” was meant to appear as if it surfaced from this dark and unknown world.) Before streaming on-line porn, the thrill of exploring the many sub-genres of the pornographic world came through mail box, and there was a large network of guys with all sorts of tastes, connected via post, waiting to snatch up the latest tapes making the rounds. “Greg & Joey” was one such tape. I don’t remember who I got it from, I just remember being told about an amateur video that would absolutely blow my mind.



Back then, reasonably good amateur porn was hard to come by. If anyone remembers the “Rob Lowe Sex Tape” from the mid 80’s, that was about the caliber of home-grown tape that circulated at the time: grainy, clinical, and not very exciting. To come across something as provocative and confrontational as “Greg & Joey” was nearly unheard of, and it quickly gained a reputation. One of the few clear face shots we get of Joey on the tape is an introduction (between tapes “2” & “3”), where he tells viewers about an 800 number where they can call for more tapes (my copy of the tape cut off shortly after he says, “Hi, I’m Joey,” and I’ve only heard the “800 number” story from other collectors). But no other tapes ever surfaced amongst collectors. And even though the full 96 minute tape I had in the 90’s now turns up all over the internet (who knows, it’s possible the full length version floating around on-line is sourced from a copy obtained from me. I made a *ton* of copies of that tape), no sign of other tapes have popped up.



The nature of their relationship on the tape borderlines uncomfortable, but never ceases in its watchability. Their roles as “top” and “bottom” are clearly defined, down to the stereotypical body shapes for each of them. Greg has a particularly aggressive approach to his topping, which is wildly exciting, but borders being “mean.” The amount of “shut up” we hear directed towards the uncontainable Joey (which Greg extends to covering Joey’s face with a pillow at one point), is only balanced by Joey’s “bitch in heat” style lust towards Greg’s dick.

But I have seen recent porn on the internet that directly references this tape (there’s even a “remake”). It’s also been the source of speculation for porn-bloggers, who are also intrigued by its mysterious nature. At least 15 years since I first saw this tape, it is still a game changer.
