Włochy, 1800 ro. Malarz Mario Cavaradossi ukrywa przed prześladowcami swego
przyjaciela który uciekł z więzienia, Castel Sant'Angelo, a tym samym naraża
siebie i swoją ukochaną Florię Toscę na śmiertelne niebezpieczeństwo. W Tosce
namiętnie zakochany jest szef policji Scarpia, postanawia śledzić Mario ...

Tosca to jedno z najpopularniejszych dzieł Pucciniego. Opera ma niezwykle żywą,
dynamiczną akcję, a także zróżnicowaną muzykę. Kompozytor posługiwał się (zgodnie
z koncepcją Wagnera) motywami przewodnimi. Do Toski skomponował ich ok. 60. Zmieniają
się one bardzo szybko, zwłaszcza w I akcie.
Tosca jest przykładem konwencji weryzmu operowego. Stąd wiele brutalnych scen,
niespotykanych w operach epoki belcanta. Arie w Tosce nie są już wyłącznie popisami
śpiewaków – swoim tekstem nawiązują do treści libretta.
