But once into the racket, he finds he can’t get out. He tries. The police machine turns against him, and a warrant is issued for his arrest on corruption charges. He has to resolve his chaotic love life, but he also has to run. It is 1967, and the background is the Cultural Revolution riots which shook the colony. Blue Lantern is the colloquial Cantonese name for the Hong Kong Police, and means ‘the light which gives no illumination’. The novel is based on a true story, and will appeal to any insightful reader interested in east-west relations between the sexes, and British colonial behaviour.
