Description
Ginger Baker Trio Falling off the Roof
Released : October 29, 1996 Label: Atlantic Format : Mp3@320 Falling Off the Roof, by the Ginger Baker Trio, might be a surprise for those who fondly recall Baker's volcanic thumping in the late '60s with Cream and Blind Faith. Truth is, Baker has long considered himself a jazz man. Collaborating again with jazz luminaries -- bassist Charlie Haden and guitarist Bill Frisell -- Baker's playing emphasizes nuance over bombast. Falling Off the Roof has a sparse, clear sound that effectively mixes elegance with power. Of particular note is the trio's hard-swinging take on Haden's ``Sunday at the Hillcrest,'' featuring delightful solos by Frisell and guest guitarist Jerry Hahn. Haden, a supremely adaptable player, takes on the difficult role of being supportive but stimulating while Frisell and Hahn fly. As he does throughout ``Falling Off the Roof,'' Baker never overplays, drumming to frame the music as much as propel it. Joining the trio on three tracks is the ubiquitous Bela Fleck on banjo. Fleck's contribution to Frisell's oddly lilting ``Amarillo Barbados'' brings to mind an unlikely, but successful, cross between Marty Robbins and Wes Montgomery. Tracklist : 1.
