Description
Giovanni Maria Bononcini is virtually unknown today, though he was a highly respected violinist in Modena in the latter part of the 17th century. He may have trained Uccellini, and he is known to have produced a wide range of works, most of which have been lost over time. Though he died young (of unknown causes) in his thirties, he lived long enough to produce three sons, all of whom became composers, and one of whom, Giovanni Bononcini, would become celebrated both in the Italian States and abroad for his operas. This collection of quasi-dances--sophisticated court works based on simpler forms, and often display pieces both of composition and performance in his day--show off Bononcini to advantage, though I can't say as much for the sound on this release. Still, they're not to be found anywhere else, and are well worth hearing.
