Ameryka na skraju kryzysu finansowego. Przestępczość rośnie, a politycy nie podejmują żadnych działań. Bohaterem filmu jest pewien pracownik zakładu pogrzebowego. Mężczyzna zupełnie nie odczuwa skutków kryzysu, nie interesują go też ludzkie tragedie. Jest samotny i nie okazuje żadnych emocji.
Pewnego dnia w okolicy pojawia się gangster Carver, a do zakładu pogrzebowego dostarczone zostaje ciało młodej kobiety. Wkrótce, bohater odnajduje w pobliżu kostnicy dziecko, które jest synkiem zmarłej kobiety. Najwyraźniej Carver szuka właśnie tego chłopca.
