In deze gloednieuwe BBC-bewerking van het meesterwerk van Charles Dickens zien we hoe de elfjarige weesjongen Pip op een koude winterdag een onaangename ontmoeting heeft met de uit de gevangenis ontsnapte Magwitch. De misdadiger geeft de doodsbange Pip opdracht een vijl te stelen waarmee hij zich van zijn boeien kan bevrijden. Bij terugkeer blijkt de jongen niet alleen een vijl voor Magwitch te hebben meebracht, maar ook iets te eten; een onschuldige goede daad die voor hen beiden later nog grote gevolgen zal hebben. Intussen is de rijke maar excentrieke Miss Havisham ten tonele verschenen. Zij ziet in Pip het ideale speelkameraadje voor haar geadopteerde dochter, de mooie Estella. Pip speelt zijn rol aanvankelijk met enige tegenzin, maar na verloop van tijd begint hij Estella steeds leuker te vinden. Dan ontdekt hij tot zijn spijt dat Miss Havisham heel andere toekomstplannen voor hem heeft dan hij had gehoopt. Van zijn 'grote verwachtingen' dreigt niets terecht te komen...

Pip


When we first meet him, orphan Pip is being raised by his sister and her husband Joe in the marshes of Kent.
As a boy, Pip dreams of following in Joe’s footsteps as a blacksmith. But after a summons to meet Miss Havisham and her daughter Estella at Satis House, Pip’s horizons open up and he starts to imagine a different future for himself. Pip desperately wants to improve himself, but at what cost?

Miss Havisham


Miss Havisham lives in Satis House with her adopted daughter, Estella.
She has not left the house since she was abandoned on her wedding day and roams from room to room in her torn and faded wedding dress. The clocks in Satis House stopped a long time ago and the house steadily decays around her. But while her world has not moved on for years, Miss Havisham sees a little boy with potential in Pip...

Estella


Miss Havisham's adopted daughter Estella has been brought up to a life of luxury, wealth and class.
When Pip arrives at Satis House Estella cannot bear the thought of playing with a common labouring boy. But they get to know each other and their connection grows. As the children become adults, everything suggests their destiny is to be together.

Abel Magwitch


A fearsome criminal, Magwitch is a fugitive from a prison ship when he meets Pip on the marshes one Christmas Eve.
The young boy is terrified, but Pip’s instinctive kindness makes a deep impression on Magwitch. Although Magwitch is deported to Australia, he never forgets their encounter and it will have far reaching consequences for them both.

Jaggers


First encountered at Satis House, it is the formidable lawyer Jaggers who later brings Pip news of his great expectations, and becomes his guardian when he moves to London.
Jaggers is the man everyone wants to represent them. Even the vicious criminals he defends are terrified of him. But is there is more to Jaggers than his impenetrable exterior?

Joe Gargery


Pip's brother-in-law Joe is the village blacksmith. Together with his overbearing wife, Joe has brought Pip up since he was orphaned.
