PSYCHEDELIC PERCUSSION
by Hal Blaine ~ Original 1967 Stereo Mix ~ + Art + Spectograms + 1 Bonus Track! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Recorded off the original, 1967 vinyl pressing (Dunhill DS 50019) with an Audio- Technica AT-LP120-USB Direct Drive Professional Turntable (quartz lock engaged). Lineage: Stereo LP -- Turntable -- Audacity v.2.0.3 (editing) -- FLAC -- Foobar2000 v1.2.9 (Tag Editing & Dynamic Range evaluation) Vinyl Quality: VG Type: Stereo Mix, 16bit/48khz FLAC (tracks, no .cue) RIAA Applied: Yes (by turntable EQ) Dynamic Range: DR13 Year Of Pressing: 1967 Year Of Rip: 2013 Genre: Psychedelic Rock / Avant-Garde / Art Rock Editing: Manual click/pop removal using the "repair" function in Audacity (NO filters or Noise Reduction has been applied.) This process has taken many, many hours of careful listening and selection, as many notes intended by the artist could be mistaken for noise on a spectogram. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hal Blaine, then. Each time I meet him he puts me uptight, and this is my fault and certainly not his, and probably stems from the fact that he believes in himself and his ability (which is considerable) whereas there are times when I do not - believe in myself, I should add because Hal is a man one respects. Or should. I usually see him in the studio which is where most of us see him for he's there from morning to morning without sleep, food, sustenance, spiritual encouragement and often thanks, which he deserves because he's the finest drummer in the country, continent and possibly the world. In his little study within the massive Blaine mansion (he's rich, married, and happily domesticated when separated from his drums) the walls present an illustrious collage of musical history. There is a picture of Hal standing with Basie, an autographed portrait of the Beach Boys expressing thanks for services rendered, and an abundance of Gold Records (one of the more honest status symbols in pop) on which his drum sound - an unusual, tight, thick sound which has become something of a hallmark - has played an integral role. So. Blaine is best. He knows it and so should you and he will tell you with supreme self-confidence and justifiable pride. People should know that Blaine beats his skins for Frank Sinatra. They should know that his sound has been heard on over a hundred million-selling records. They should know that if the Mamas & Papas cannot get Blaine for a session, then there is no session and they'll cancel their studio tie at great personal expense. Artists want the best, and the best is Blaine. This is a beautiful album. The music here constitutes a mind-excursion of rare beauty, and semantically is therefore psychedelic. But I would like to think it is more likely to start a trend than to catch one. And then, perhaps, we will have the benefit of Hal Blaine in concert, Hal Blaine on the tube, and Hal Blaine on the airwaves. Percussion genius - you are on.
