Excerpt:

Community colleges have been educating students in the United States for over a century through multiple missions and for multiple stake- holders. These institutions have proven to be nimble in responding to students’ needs through many programs and services delivered through student affairs organizations. No matter the purpose for a student’s enrolment, community colleges have made a difference in the lives of multiple generations. Their history, while short compared to their four-year counterparts, has served as an egalitarian means by which many students have received the opportunity to participate in the higher education enterprise. In this chapter I provide a historical context for student affairs work in community colleges, offering an introduction to student affairs in the community college, as well as a historical background for many early developments and more contemporary advancements.

First I describe the multiple missions and typical characteristics of community college students. Significant events that have shaped student affairs work over the years are addressed through five time periods: 1901–1925, 1926–1950, 1951–1975, 1976–2000, and 2001–present. While many of these events are not specific to community colleges, they are relevant to all types of student affairs and higher education settings. Additionally, I present enrolment statistics for community colleges for these time periods. These statistics are intended to demonstrate the growth of community college enrolment over time, as well as to provide (where possible) greater demographic data on those attending. Some contemporary issues for student affairs administrators in community colleges provide a modern-day context for working in student affairs in the community college. More about the agenda for the future for those working in this setting or those preparing or planning to do so appears in chapter 17.
