traditionally divided are only approximate. This chronology mainly follows that given in I. Shaw and P. Nicholson, British Museum Dictionary of Ancient Egypt (London: British Museum Press, 1995). Abbreviations used are as follows: BCE = before common era (also known as BC); CE = common era (also known as AD); and c. = circa (the approximate time of).
