INTRO : For almost 20 years, one of the key resource artists for HEARTS of SPACE has been English composer, producer, and musical theoretician BRIAN ENO. His work has appeared in at least 45 programs since 1983, including three specials devoted entirely to his ambient work. But we've never done a retrospective — until now. On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE — "SPIRITS DRIFTING," a BRIAN ENO RETROSPECTIVE.

Described by popstar collaborator DAVID BOWIE as "one of the keenest musical minds of the 20th century" BRIAN PETER GEORGE ST. JOHN LE BAPTISTE DE LA SALLE ENO continues to amaze and delight listeners in the 21st. In addition to producing mainstream rock bands like Talking Heads, Devo and U2, he continues to work on obscure and experimental music and visual art projects.

From his early days as the electronica specialist in British pop band ROXY MUSIC, Eno's restless mind led him to venture well beyond conventional methods of making music, taking ideas from the classical world and applying them to electronics and recording technology. His interest in self-generating music and environment-creating sound led to his landmark "ambient music" manifesto of 1978 — a call for an intelligent background music that was "as ignorable as it is interesting," that "created calm — and a space to think."
