The Private Eye Kindaichi mysteries originate from a series of novels
by Seishi Yokomizo.
In 1977 and 78, Kon Ichikawa adapted three of them for the screen and directed The Devil's Ballad, Hell's Gate Island and Queen Bee, one after the other.

This film is set on a tiny island in the middle of the Sea of Japan
with a name not likely approved of by the marketing department of
Tourism Japan.
Our hero, Kindaichi is asked to go to Hell's Gate
Island and inform the locals that the head of their leading family has succumbed to malaria on his way home from the war.
This simple fact leads to multiple murders in a plot full of twists and strange
happenings.
