Description Two of the most original keyboard works of the 20th century are presented on this disc. At the time Howells wrote them, the harpsichord was undergoing a rebirth, and instrument makers were looking at different designs. Among these was the lautenwerck--literally, lute-harpsichord, since it substitutes gut strings for metal ones, creating a softer sound. (JS Bach owned two of them.) Howells' pair of suites ingeniously mixed turn-of-the-17th-century style with early 20th century Neo-Classicism. The individual movements are dedicated to the composer's friends, often composers, themselves: so "Dart's Sarabande" is meant for Thurston Dart, the great harpsichordist, while "Ralph's Galliard" is for the composer Ralph Vaughan Williams, and "Finzi's Rest" for the composer Gerald Finzi. (The last even imitates a key element of Finzi's style, a slowly walking bass line under a very noble, serene theme.) Of the two recordings out there that are complete, one has all the repeats, but only uses a standard harpsichord. This version removes the repeats, but uses a genuine lautenwerck. Want the repeats?
