Description

Product Description

In Detail

VMware vSphere 5.x provides a robust and resilient platform for virtualizing server and application workloads in datacenters. The features available in VMware’s vSphere 5.x suite of products simplify the management of resources, increase the availability of applications, and guarantee the performance of workloads deployed in the virtualized datacenters. "VMware vSphere 5.x Design Cookbook" covers the design process from creating the conceptual design, to determining the resource requirements for the logical design, and then on to creating the physical design.

"VMware vSphere 5.x Datacenter Design Cookbook" begins with the process of identifying the design factors and applying them to the logical and physical design process in order to create a successful vSphere 5.x design. The key to a successful VMware vSphere 5.x design is the design’s ability to satisfy the design factors. This Cookbook walks you through the process of identifying the design factors which include the requirements the design must satisfy and the assumptions the architect makes to form the conceptual design.

From the conceptual design, the logical design is created. The logical design process includes determining the architecture of and the resources required for the management, storage, network, and compute resources. This Cookbook includes recipes for calculating the resources required and determining the architecture and features to use while applying VMware recommended practices.

The physical design takes the logical design requirements and maps them to the physical infrastructure required to support the resources. "VMware vSphere 5.x Datacenter Design Cookbook" offers recipes to determine the physical resources and configuration required to support the logical design while satisfying the design factors. Finally, the book provides recipes for creating design documentation. Documenting the design, the implementation procedures, and the verification procedures are also covered towards the end of the book.
Approach

A practical guide packed with step-by-step recipes to design a virtual datacenter using VMware 5.x
Who this book is for

This book is a guide for anyone interested in designing virtualized datacenters using VMware vSphere 5.x and the supporting components. Current administrators of VMware vSphere environments will find this book useful when interested in becoming a vSphere Architect or are interested in learning more about the virtual datacenter design process. About the Author

Hersey Cartwright

Hersey Cartwright has worked in the technology industry since 1996 in many roles from help desk support to IT management. He first started working with VMware technologies in 2006. He was the key sponsor of the virtualization initiative at ABNB Federal Credit Union and played a key role in the design, implementation, and management of ABNB's virtual infrastructure.
In his current role as the Senior Virtualization Engineer at ABS Technology Architects, he is responsible for the design and implementation of VMware environments, supporting a wide range of business applications. Most of the work he does is with small and medium environments with 3-10 hosts, but he has also been involved with several large multi-site deployments. He has experience with a wide variety of server and storage platforms.
Since January 2011, he has been an instructor with the VMware IT Academy at Tidewater Community College where he teaches the VMware Install, Configure, and Manage vSphere 5 and the Optimize and Scale vSphere 5 courses. He has designed and implemented the lab environment used by students in the virtualization and security programs offered at the Chesapeake Campus of Tidewater Community College. He enjoys teaching and learns a lot from teaching others about the benefits of virtualization.
Along with VMware certifications, he also holds certifications from Citrix for XenApp and XenDesktop and the Information Storage Associate (EMCISA) certification from EMC.
He actively participates in the VMware community and has been awarded the vExpert title in both 2013 and 2012. He has presented multiple ProfessionalVMware.com vBrownBags on vSphere administration, vSphere design, and vSphere disaster recovery. He regularly blogs about virtualization and other technologies at http://www.vhersey.com/.

Great resource for VCAP-DCD Preparation but also for budding architects 28 May 2014
By Ather Beg -

When it comes to IT, cookbook type books are generally a natural fit for hands-on stuff e.g. administration. That said, they can also be used quite effectively where a process follows a standard path with interdependencies. Datacenter design is an example of one such process and this book is an example where it suits to have "cookbook" style flow.

The book is neatly defined into chapters which addresses the different tasks that a designer/architect has to go through, to come up with a good design that meet all customer requirements. Those tasks are taken by the general sequence that a typical architect would follow and the various ways in which they can be carried out, where applicable. The writer also does a good job of explaining why a certain tasks is done, what are the required outputs from it and how to do it etc.

The chapters which relate to the physical design aspects, contain relevant calculations techniques with an example scenario. Also throughout the book, steps are shown for the administrative tasks that are better explained with a practical example, with screenshots of steps and relevant output.

I feel that it would have been nice to have the storage section enhanced with the latest developments in that arena e.g. flash/hybrid arrays, server-side storage and caching technologies, with the explanation of how it provides more choice for different workloads and may affect the calculations mentioned in that section.

I think this is a great resource for those preparing for the VCAP-DCD exam but also for budding architects, to be used as a "checklist" as it's easy to forget something when the pressure is on to deliver a design.

Best Book for Learning how to Design 30 May 2014

This is the best Design book for someone to learn how to design a vmware virtualized datacenter. The example based method used from start to finish was the best. 5 Stars for this.

Great content and easy to follow recipes / calculations to ensure your VMware vSphere design works as required. Simple and effective while still giving the technical depth needed to handle just about any deployment. If you are looking to design and deploy a vSphere environment or looking to improve on an existing deployment, this book is an absolute must!

Excellent, Well Thought Out VMware Design resource 3 September 2014
By L R E -

This book takes a logical approach and really seems to explain things from an architectural standpoint. This resource helps the reader to understand some concepts and gives further insight on how things work in a production environment and design aspects that should be taken into consideration. I particularly like the author's section on virtual networking and vMotion, it really just put a lot of separate concepts together. Overall an excellent resource for those of us who are working to gain a better understanding of VMware design aspects.
