The High Society series continues to throw up remarkable stories. None more so than this, the life of Leslie “Hutch” Hutchinson.

Hutchinson was an immensely good-looking black cabaret singer - a superstar of his era - who became the darling of London society in the 1920s and 1930s. He performed at aristocratic parties and slept with anything posh that moved.

His most notorious affair was with Edwina Mountbatten, which was exposed publicly in the newspapers, resulting in a libel case during which Lady Mountbatten lied to the court - later admitting as much. Thereafter, Hutch's career never fully recovered. His private life was a shambles, with at least six children by different women. He gambled, drank and name-dropped, eking out a living in seaside variety shows. When he died penniless, Lord Mountbatten paid for his gravestone.
