Programme Description:

The notorious Beeching Report of 1963 led to the closure of a third of Britain's railway lines and stations. The report's author - Dr. Richard Beeching - has been seen as the country's bogeyman, a kind of Genghis Khan with a slide rule, ruthlessly axing swathes of the rail network in the name of progress. But was he simply the fall guy for something that had to happen?

Here, in a repeat of a classic interview, Eric Robson talks to Lord Beeching about his time as Chairman of the British Railways Board between 1961 and 1965, asking if he would have done things differently with hindsight.
