Description

Ever wondered about the monument you pass every day? Been puzzled by a strange street name? Bewildered by extraordinary stories about your local pub? Have you found a secret passageway in your house? Wanted to know more about your local high street? Or simply hit a dead end after years of your own local history investigation?

Whatever the mystery our team of sleuths, Jonathan Foyle (Time Team, Meet the Ancestors), Miranda Krestovnikoff (Hidden Treasure, Wreck Detectives) and Nick Barratt (House Detectives, Who Do You Think You Are?) are ready for any challenge to help members of the public solve historical mysteries on their doorsteps.

The team of experts will give them the low-down on separating fact from fiction, helping them to navigate their way through the archives and reading the architectural language of buildings and landscapes. With Nick checking forensics, and Jonathan and Miranda in the field investigating the local area, our trio of investigators solve the mystery by searching for architectural clues, examining maps, exploring local stories and legends, and backing it all up with forensic evidence and hard-core documentary research.

Programme 1 – The Secrets of the Smugglers’ Tunnels

The series starts with the History Mystery team investigating local smuggling myths in Porthleven, Cornwall, to decipher the truth behind the claim that the town’s local pub, The Ship Inn, was a hive of smuggling activity and intrigue throughout the18th century – and suspects it may even have some smuggling tunnels in the basement.

Programme 2 – The Post Mistress who was a spy?

John and Adele Richardson are fascinated by the local legend that Mary Queen of Scots rode through their land and stopped at the now-ruined Pele tower, situated on their farm.

Programme 6 – Puzzle at the Palace

This history challenge is to investigate Kathryn Gibson’s suspicions that her house at Pen y Bryn has a distinguished ancestry. She believes her home is nothing less than the palace of the last Welsh Prince of Wales, yet has no conclusive proof.

Programme 7 – Hidden Highwaymen

A ‘Robber’s Stone’ in Devizes, marks the spot where in 1839, wealthy farmer Robert Dean, was ambushed by a gang of thieves.
