HKB 1908 version, 16000Hz mono 16Kbps The first significant Bible translations into Hungarian are as follows: -Hussite Bible (probably 1436-1439, only fragments remained) -New Testament (1541, Janos Sylvester): the first full New Testament in Hungarian -Gaspar Karoli's translation (also known as Vizsolyi Bible and its translator as Karolyi, 1590, Protestant): the first complete version in Hungarian (rev. 1908), which gained wide popularity and is used even today as the "classic" translation, similarly to the KJV in English -Gyorgy Kaldi's translation (1626, the first full Catholic version) -Protestant translation by the Hungarian Bible Society (1975, 1990, 2014) -Saint Stephen Society Bible; Catholic translation -Saint Jerome Bible Society; Catholic. Based on Kaldi's translation and the Nova Vulgata. The Vizsoly Bible, also called Károli Bible was the first Bible printed in the Hungarian language. It was translated in the 16th century by pastor Gáspár Károli and fellow Calvinists and was printed in 1590 by Bálint Mantskovit. A copy is kept on permanent display in the Hungarian village of Vizsoly. Károli names his sources in the foreword: the Vulgata, the Septuaginta, translations and commentaries by Franciscus Vatablus, Sebastian Münster, Santes Pagninus and Immanuel Tremellius; he also used the Hebrew and Greek texts. It is not clear to what extent he utilized earlier, incomplete Hungarian translations; he does refer to those of Gáspár Heltai and Péter Melius Juhász, and he used the translation of Psalm 74 by István Székely Károli was aware that the translation was not without errors, as he wrote in the foreword: I don't doubt that this work of ours, after it becomes known among people, will be envied and slandered. For just as the body is followed by the shadow, virtue, by which I mean good deeds, is followed by envy. And those who are born to slander, since they are unable to do deeds or create works similar to those of others, slander them if they cannot do more harm to them. But I care not for the envy and slanders, for as God and my good conscience are my witnesses, I've done this for nothing else but the glory of God and I had only the strengthening of His house in view. He asks all Christian readers not to scold him for his errors, but to pinpoint them to him, so that he can correct them. His death shortly after the first publication prevented him from revising his translation. The Karoli translation was updated in 1908 by the British and Foreign Bible Society (founded in 1804) and that revision was picked up by the Hungarian Bible Council (founded in 1949) and in 1975 they made their own translation which was revised in 1990. The Council established the Hungarian Bible Foundation in 1991 on which the Hungarian Bible Society was built in 1992 which still is selling the 1908 Karoli- and the Council's 1990 translations. In 2014, still working on their new translation in cooperation with the United Bible Societies, the Hungarian Bible Society practically abandoned many readings of the 1908 Karoli translation (similarly at verses where the new English versions changed the King James Bible). Since 2000 the Hungarian Love of Christ Church, part of the Word of Faith Movement, keeps editing the Karoli translation (7th ed,2011) based on early manuscripts and on literature written by international scholarlship. Gáspár Károli (1529-1591) was a Hungarian pastor. Károli started his school in Nagykároly and finished in Brassó. In 1556 he went to the Wittenberg Academy. In 1566 he ordered the Synod of Gönc. He translated the Bible to Hungarian in 1586 with supports of Sigismund Rákóczi. The translation is also called the Bible of Vizsoly, after the town where it was first published in 1590. It was the first Hungarian translation of both the Old and New Testament. He is the most known and famous Hungarian Calvinist.
