Their skeleton was largely taken from Suetonus,

Plutarch and Tacitus, but for flesh they drew on

Graves' profound scholarship and knowledge of all

available classical literature - Graves was probaly

the first person after Gibbon to have such a wide

grasp of the subject.



Graves' story 'A Tenement In Ancient Rome', which

he said was true, explains his special affinity with

Rome's early Imperial period.
