TRAMA:

Un impresario di pompe funebri, John Miller, arriva a Nanchino per dare sepoltura al sacerdote che dirigeva un convento per ragazze cattoliche, proprio mentre la città viene invasa dell'esercito giapponese. Al convento giungono anche un gruppo di prostitute che si nascondono dai giapponesi. In seguito Miller si finge sacerdote e prenderà accordi con ufficiale dell'esercito invasore per proteggere le ragazze. Quando in seguito a degli ordini dall'alto le ragazze del convento sono costrette ad andare a una festa dove probabilmente sarebbero violentate le prostitute decidono di sostituirsi a loro per risparmiarle questa sofferenza. Miller infine scapperà dal convento con le ragazze in una zona sicura mentre le prostitute vanno alla festa, delle prostitute non si ha più notizia.

STORYLINE:

In 1937 China, during the second Sino-Japanese war, a mortician, John (Christian Bale) arrives at a Catholic church in Nanjing to prepare a priest for burial. Upon arrival he finds himself the lone adult among a group of convent girl students and prostitutes from a nearby brothel. When he finds himself in the unwanted position of protector of both groups from the horrors of the invading Japanese army, he discovers the meaning of sacrifice and honor.
