Il mago di Oz (The Wizard of Oz) è un film del 1939 diretto da Victor Fleming.
Il film è ispirato a Il meraviglioso mago di Oz, il primo dei tredici libri di Oz dello scrittore statunitense L. Frank Baum.
Regista della trasposizione cinematografica è Victor Fleming, noto anche per Via col vento, uscito nello stesso anno, mentre la protagonista (Dorothy Gale) è Judy Garland, una delle attrici di maggior successo dell'epoca.
Il film ha ricevuto molti riconoscimenti ed è considerato un classico della storia del cinema.
La nota canzone Over the Rainbow (musica di Harold Arlen, parole di E.Y. Harburg e interpretata dalla protagonista Judy Garland) è stata successivamente reinterpretata da molti artisti e usata in diversi ambiti.

Dorothy Gale (Judy Garland) è una ragazzina che vive con gli zii in una fattoria del Kansas.
La piccola possiede un cagnolino, chiamato Totò, che, per l’ennesima volta, ha combinato un guaio:
ha infatti inseguito il gatto della signorina Gulch, un'odiosa brutta zitella riccona della zona, all’interno del suo giardino e, non appena questa ha cercato di acchiapparlo,
lui le ha morso una gamba, riuscendo però a fuggire dalle grinfie della megera grazie all’aiuto della padroncina.
Dorothy, tornata alla fattoria, chiede aiuto ai due zii, cercando di giustificare l’amato cagnolino.
Questi però sembrano troppo occupati per ascoltarla, una vecchia incubatrice infatti si e rotta e stanno perdendo parecchi pulcini.
Dorothy, sentendosi inascoltata, decide dunque di andare a parlare con i tre contadini che lavorano alla fattoria, Zeke, Hickory e Hunk.
Anche loro sono però troppo occupati e non possono ascoltarla, solo Hunk risponde alla ragazzina, ribadendo che, secondo lui, lei ha la paglia al posto del cervello, Hickory difende Dorothy sostenendo che la Gulch sia senza cuore a prendersela sempre con lei.
Zeke invece, mentre dà il mangime ai maiali, consiglia a Dorothy di prendersi di coraggio e gridare in faccia alla sig.ra Gulch tutto quello che pensa di lei. Ma proprio lui, non appena la ragazzina cade all’interno del porcile, dimostra di essere un gran fifone.
La zia Emma, di fronte all’ennesima richiesta d’aiuto della nipote, le chiede di viaggiare meno con la fantasia e di trovarsi in un posto dove stare tranquilla.
Dorothy allora, nella celebre canzone “Over the Rainbow”, sogna di trovarsi in un mondo magnifico, dove il cielo e gli uccellini sono azzurri, dove tutti possono vivere felici.
Proprio in quel momento, in bicicletta, arriva alla fattoria la signorina Gulch.
La megera si reca dalla zia Emma e dallo zio Henry, ha infatti ottenuto il permesso dallo sceriffo per sequestrare ed abbattere Toto.
Dorothy va su tutte le furie ma non può fare nulla per salvare il cagnolino, la zia Emma è costretta a consegnarlo alla signorina Gulch.
Mentre però questa, sempre in bicicletta, sta recandosi dallo sceriffo, Toto, che era stato rinchiuso in un cestino, riesce a fuggire e a tornare dalla padroncina.
Dorothy decide allora di andar via di casa insieme al cagnolino, alla ricerca di un nuovo posto dove vivere. Durante il tragitto incontra un particolare individuo, il professor Meraviglia, un mago da strapazzo che vive all’interno di un carretto.
Questi, facendo credere alla ragazzina di poter vedere il futuro, la convince a tornare a casa senza far impensierire i due poveri zii.
Dorothy ascolta i suoi consigli e torna indietro. Un forte vento inizia ad abbattersi sulla prateria...


The Wizard of Oz is a 1939 American musical fantasy film produced by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.
It was directed primarily by Victor Fleming.
Noel Langley, Florence Ryerson and Edgar Allan Woolf received credit for the screenplay, but there were uncredited contributions by others.
The lyrics for the songs were written by E.Y. Harburg, the music by Harold Arlen. Incidental music, based largely on the songs, was by Herbert Stothart, with borrowings from classical composers.

Kansas farm girl Dorothy Gale (Judy Garland) lives with her Aunt Em (Clara Blandick), Uncle Henry (Charley Grapewin), and three farm hands, Hickory (Jack Haley), Hunk (Ray Bolger), and Zeke (Bert Lahr).
When Miss Almira Gulch (Margaret Hamilton) is bitten by Dorothy's pet Cairn Terrier, Toto, she gets a sheriff's order and takes him away to be destroyed.
He escapes and returns to Dorothy, who, fearing for his life, runs away with him.
Dorothy soon encounters a traveling fortune teller named Professor Marvel (Frank Morgan), who guesses she has run away and tells her fortune.
He convinces her to return home by falsely telling her that Aunt Em has fallen ill from grief.
With a tornado fast approaching, she rushes back to the farmhouse, but is unable to join her family in the locked storm cellar.
Taking shelter inside the house, she is knocked unconscious by a window frame blown in by the twister...
