Un anziano barone in esilio - che ha lasciato la Russia all'esplosione della rivoluzione d'Ottobre - torna clandestinamente in patria per ritrovare i gioielli che la suocera - glielo ha confidato in punto di morte - ha nascosto in una delle dodici sedie di famiglia rimaste in territorio sovietico. Finalmente ritrovano anche l'ultima, ma è vuota anche questa: venuti fortunosamente, alla luce infatti, i gioielli che conteneva sono serviti ai sovietici per costruire una casa di riposo. E' una lezione per l'avido barone, che, vinti la rabbia e lo sconforto, si lascia contagiare dall'ottimistica rassegnazione del suo giovane amico.
