Thriller di anticipazione che è anche una favola filosofica sui nostri tempi con risvolti politici e sociologici. I suoi primi 20´ e gli ultimi 10 ne fanno un precursore della SF moderna al cinema. Vinse un Oscar speciale per il trucco creato da John Chambers. Sceneggiato con competenza da Michael Wilson e Rod Serling, ha uno dei suoi punti di forza nella fotografia di Leon Shamroy. Seguito da L'altra faccia del pianeta delle scimmie.
