Trama

La storia riprende dopo la fine della prima parte, La Compagnia dell'Anello.
Durante la marcia verso Mordor Frodo e Sam si accorgono di essere seguiti e decidono di tendere una trappola al loro inseguitore. Una notte lasciano che Gollum si avvicini loro alla ricerca dell'Anello per poi catturarlo dopo una piccola battaglia strappandogli la promessa di essere accompagnati a Mordor in cambio della libertà.
Saruman crea sempre più Uruk-hai per la guerra contro Rohan e stringe nuove alleanze con gli uomini delle montagne per farli combattere al suo fianco. Così i mostri creati dal potere malefico dello stregone cominciano a razziare le terre del Mark attaccando i villaggi e uccidendone tutti gli abitanti. In uno dei tanti scontri tra Rohan e Saruman, Théodred, figlio del re Théoden, rimane ferito gravemente per poi essere ritrovato da Éomer in fin di vita e condotto a Edoras. Qui Éomer è cacciato da Rohan dopo uno scontro verbale con Grima Vermilinguo in cui il nipote del re manifesta i suoi sospetti verso di lui, infatti, in segreto, Grima lavora per Saruman e ritiene pericolosa la vicinanza di Éomer al re ormai assoggettato al potere dello stregone bianco.
Aragorn, Legolas e Gimli incontrano Éomer e la sua banda per avere informazioni sui rapitori degli Hobbit. Questi ultimi riferiscono loro che gli Uruk-Hai sono stati completamente distrutti e che non c'erano sopravvissuti. A questo punto, si recano sul luogo dello scontro e grazie alle abilità di Aragorn capiscono che gli Hobbit si sono salvati rifugiandosi nella foresta di Fangorn. Entrandovi alla ricerca di Merry e Pipino, Aragorn, Legolas e Gimli incontrano Gandalf, che credevano ormai scomparso dopo lo scontro con il Balrog avvenuto sul ponte di Khazad-dûm.
Lo stregone si presenta con un aspetto rinnovato e sfoggia vesti bianche, segno del suo forte cambiamento di crescita portato sia dal tradimento di Saruman sia dalla sconfitta del Balrog. Da questo momento in poi lo stregone sarà ricordato con il nome di Gandalf il Bianco e non più come Gandalf il Grigio.
Con questo incontro lo scopo dei membri della Compagnia cambia radicalmente. Gandalf, infatti, suggerisce ai tre di evitare di seguire le tracce dei due Hobbit, poiché sa che sono riusciti a mettersi in salvo, tuttavia devia l'attenzione su un problema più grande: la guerra che sta per colpire Rohan.
I quattro devono raggiungere il re di Rohan e risvegliarlo dall'incantesimo di Saruman, che l’ha intorpidito nel corpo e nella mente e reso incapace di agire, per poterlo convincere a organizzare una difesa contro l'esercito di ferocissimi Uruk-hai che si avvicina sempre più a Rohan per distruggerlo.
Gollum, Frodo e Sam, dopo aver marciato verso il cancello nero di Mordor e non essere riusciti a entrare, decidono di prendere un'altra via nota solo a Gollum e così riprendono il loro viaggio. Durante una sosta s’imbattono in uno degli eserciti di Sauron. Non facendosi notare osservano il loro passaggio scorgendo un animale a loro sconosciuto: l'Olifante. Mentre ammirano questo enorme animale, non si accorgono della presenza degli uomini di Gondor capitanati da Faramir, che attaccano e massacrano l'esercito nemico per poi catturare Frodo e Sam. Dopo la cattura sono condotti in un rifugio all'interno di una cascata (la cosiddetta "Finestra che si affaccia a Occidente") usato come base per i movimenti delle truppe di Gondor.
Risvegliato Re Théoden dall'incantesimo, i Compagni riescono a convincerlo a muovere guerra contro gli Orchi e gli suggeriscono di rifugiarsi al Fosso di Helm per affrontare i nemici, così tutti gli abitanti e i cavalieri di Rohan abbandonano la città per recarsi alla fortezza costruita sopra il fosso.
Durante l'esodo, Grima Vermilinguo, cacciato dal re, torna da Saruman e lo informa di questi progetti, e così lo stregone decide di mandare una squadra di mannari selvaggi per attaccarli. Nello scontro sono vittoriosi gli uomini di Rohan, ma cade Aragorn, trascinato in un burrone da un mannaro.
Dopo la battaglia i sopravvissuti raggiungono il fosso di Helm, dove cominciano a barricarsi per l'imminente scontro con le forze di Saruman, e con stupore di tutti ritorna anche Aragorn, salvatosi dal dirupo e recante notizie riguardanti le forze del nemico. Alle forze impegnate nella difesa disperata si unisce anche uno squadrone di Elfi inviati per onorare l'antica alleanza tra Elfi e Uomini. Nel frattempo Saruman scopre il punto debole del fosso di Helm: una grata di drenaggio dell'acqua, per niente protetta, e decide di iniziare da lì il suo attacco alla fortezza.
Gollum, sfuggito alla cattura dei Gondoriani, è sorpreso da Faramir mentre s’immerge nello stagno proibito vicino al loro rifugio in cerca di pesci. A questo punto è fatto chiamare Frodo per decidere della sua vita, e l’Hobbit sceglie di aiutare i soldati di Gondor a catturarlo. Durante l'interrogatorio Gollum svela il segreto dell'Anello e Faramir decide di tenerlo per sé e donarlo a suo padre sovrintendente di Gondor soprattutto per dimostrare il suo valore di fronte al genitore.
Le truppe nemiche arrivano davanti al fosso per l'imminente scontro che vede gli Uruk-hai contro l'alleanza di Uomini ed Elfi. La battaglia inizia, sotto la tempesta, dopo una freccia scoccata per sbaglio da un arciere di Rohan che uccide uno dei nemici. All'inizio lo scontro sembra svolgersi a favore dei difensori, ma la scoperta del punto debole della fortezza rende il tutto più difficile. Saruman ha creato una polvere da sparo molto potente, creando delle "bombe" utilizzate per aprire una breccia nelle mura, nella quale si fiondano immediatamente ondate di Uruk-hai che riescono ad aprirsi un varco e conquistare parte del fosso. I difensori si rifugiano all'interno della torre della fortezza in un ultimo disperato tentativo di difesa. Lì è deciso l'ultimo attacco dei difensori, cioè una carica a cavallo in mezzo agli Uruk-hai in nome di Rohan e della sua gente. Dopo quest'ultimo atto eroico solo l'arrivo tempestivo di Gandalf e della compagnia di Éomer regala la vittoria agli uomini travolgendo gli Uruk-hai e mettendoli in fuga.
Dopo aver cercato invano di convincere gli Ent a entrare in guerra contro Sauron e Saruman durante l'Entaconsulta, Pipino chiede a Barbalbero di accompagnarli non a nord ma a Isengard, dove riprenderanno la strada per la Contea, con uno stratagemma: "Più ci avviciniamo al pericolo, meno rischiamo di essere notati" come afferma Pipino Tuc.

Plot

As Aragorn searches for Frodo, he suddenly hears Boromir's horn. He found Boromir mortally wounded by arrows, his assailants gone. Before Boromir dies, Aragorn also found out that Merry and Pippin were kidnapped by the Sauron's Orcs in spite of his efforts to defend them, and that Frodo had vanished after Boromir had tried to take the Ring from him and that he truly regretted his actions. In his last moments, he charges Aragorn to defend Minas Tirith from Sauron. With Legolas and Gimli, who had been fighting Orcs themselves, Aragorn pays his last respects to Boromir and sends him down the Great River Anduin on a funeral boat, the usual methods of burial being impracticable. Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli then resolve to follow the Uruk-hai captors. Meanwhile, after some hardship, Merry and Pippin escape when the Uruk-hai are attacked by the horsemen of Rohan, called the Rohirrim or "Riders of Rohan". Merry and Pippin escape into the nearby Fangorn Forest, where they encounter the giant treelike Ents. The Ents resemble actual trees, except they are able to see, talk, and move. These guardians of the forest generally keep to themselves, but after a long contemplation on whether or not the Hobbits were friends, or foes, their leader Treebeard persuades the Ent council to oppose the menace posed to the forest by the wizard Saruman, as suggested by Merry and Pippin, as Treebeard realizes that Saruman's minions have been cutting down large numbers of their trees to fuel the furnaces needed for Saruman's arming of his dark army.
Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas come across the Riders of Rohan led by Éomer, nephew of King Théoden. The trio learn that the horsemen had attacked a band of Orcs the previous night, and that they had left no survivors. However, Aragorn is able to track a small set of prints that lead into Fangorn, where they see an old man who disappears almost as soon as they see him - they assume him to be Saruman. Shortly afterward, the three meet Gandalf, (again, they at first take him to be Saruman) whom they believed had perished in the mines of Moria. He tells them of his fall into the abyss, his battle to the death with the Balrog and his resurrection and his enhanced power. The four ride to Rohan's capital Edoras, where Gandalf rouses King Théoden from inaction against the threat Saruman poses. In the process, Saruman's spy in Rohan (and King Théoden's trusted advisor) Gríma Wormtongue, is expelled from Rohan. Aragorn, Gimli, and Legolas then travel with Théoden's troops to the fortress of Hornburg, in the valley of Helm's Deep. Gandalf rides away before the battle begins, though he gives no reason for doing so. At the Hornburg, the army of Rohan led by King Théoden and Aragorn resist a full-scale onslaught by the hosts of Saruman. Yet, things begin to go ill with Rohan, until Gandalf arrives with the remains of the army of Westfold that Saruman's forces had previously routed. The tide now turns in Rohan's favour, and Saruman's orcs flee into a forest of Huorns, creatures similar to Ents, and none escape alive. Gandalf, Aragorn, Gimli, and Legolas, along with King Théoden and Éomer, head to Saruman's stronghold of Isengard.
Here, they reunite with Merry and Pippin and find Isengard overrun by Ents, who had flooded it by breaking a nearby dam of the river Isen, and the central tower of Orthanc besieged, with Saruman and Wormtongue trapped inside. Gandalf offers Saruman a chance to repent, but is refused, and so casts Saruman out of the Order of Wizards and the White Council. Gríma throws something from a window at Gandalf but misses, and it is picked up by Pippin. This object turns out to be one of the palantíri (seeing-stones). Pippin, unable to resist the urge, looks into it and encounters the Eye of Sauron, but emerges unscathed from the ordeal. Gandalf and Pippin then head for Minas Tirith in Gondor in preparation for the imminent war against Mordor, while Théoden and Aragorn remain behind to begin the muster of Rohan, to ride to the aid of Gondor.
Frodo and Sam discover and capture Gollum, who has been stalking them in their quest to reach Mount Doom and destroy the One Ring, as Gollum attempts to reclaim the Ring for himself. Sam loathes and distrusts him, but Frodo pities the poor creature. Gollum promises to lead the pair to the Black Gate of Mordor and for a time appears to be a true ally. He leads them through a hidden passage of the Dead Marshes in order to avoid being spied by Orcs. Frodo and Sam learn that the Dead Marshes were once part of an ancient battlefield, upon which the War of the Last Alliance was fought. Upon reaching the Black Gate, Gollum persuades the hobbits not to enter, where they would have been surely caught. He tells them of a secret entrance to Mordor. Thus, they head south into Gondor's province of Ithilien and are accosted by a group of Gondorian rangers led by Faramir, the brother of Boromir. Frodo learns from Faramir of Boromir's death and Sam accidentally reveals to Faramir that Frodo carries the One Ring. As a result of this Frodo reveals the plan to destroy the Ring in the fires of Mount Doom. Later that night, Gollum is captured diving into the sacred pool, the penalty for which is death. Frodo negotiates Gollum's freedom with Faramir. The following morning Faramir allows them to go on their way, but warns them that Gollum may know more about the secret entrance (Cirith Ungol) than he has been telling them.
