Description
The book includes keys for the identification of adults and larvae of northeastern North American Carabidae. For the purpose of the book, the northeast includes the states of Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine of the United States of America, the Canadian provinces of Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland (including Labrador), and the French overseas department of Saint-Pierre and Miquelon. Keys are provided for adults of all 97 genera and 565 species present in the northeast.
Information pertaining to the habitat requirements, seasonal activity, occurrence and dispersal power of each species is provided and the geographical divisions (occurrence within the political regions), biogeographic category (whether the species is endemic, holarctic, or exotic) and bioclimatic zones (whether the species occurs in the temperate, boreal, arctic, or alpine regions) are listed. The keys are accompanied by 372 photographs or scanning electron photographs of character states and 260 color habitus illustrations. Keys are also provided for larvae of 84 genera and for several species belonging to the genera Cicindela, Calosoma, Carabus, Scaphinotus, Sphaeroderus, Blethisa, Elaphrus, Poecilus, Pterostichus, Diplocheila, and Notiobia.
