The inner workings of a Burmese python are extraordinary. As a team of biologists cut one up in Florida, you may find your jaw gaping wide at times. Not as wide, obviously as the python's: it has, we discover, disconnected jawbones that allow it to swallow prey considerably larger than its own head. And if you haven't seen footage of a python swallowing a whole deer or, even better, swallowing an alligator (like a fight between rival handbags), you really haven't lived. There's a great little CGI sequence to illustrate how the snake walks its jaws down the prey, effectively stretching its body over and around its meal like a sleeve. And the fact that the prey in the animation is a blue bunny rabbit adds a welcome touch of Disney. There are other eye openers (python ovaries! Python legs!) and memorable sequences such as two men struggling to manhandle a dead snake out of a chest freezer. Assuming you can cope with the whole idea of very big snakes (and those who can't will have turned the page long since), it's all weirdly fascinating and fascinatingly weird.
