Canadian and progressive within the world of metal is what you have to take in to account here, new band that made its steady climb to the top in 2011, so very much the newbie’s in the trade. Don’t let the idea of a “brand new band” put you off, because it’s easy to fall foul of the idea it’s “just another band doing the same thing” ideal, which is rife in today’s metal music scene, but it would be easy to pigeon-hole Intervals on account of their progressive style.

Depending on your understanding of the genre “progressive” depends on which bands you automatically think of, which is why, I think, these guys haven’t listed any influences on the social media pages. It’s too easy to liken bands with others who are doing the same thing and before I go any further I can list 5 other bands that would have similarities to Intervals, but this would only be in the “reviewing sense” to give potential new listeners the opportunity to try them out. I would much prefer the use of “modern progressive metal” because they don’t sound like Genesis and they don’t sound like Dream Theatre; so a more modern take should be applied and I take this opportunity to include some bands that have been labelled “djent” and unfairly, so we have to broaden our expectations of the bands and their musical ability.

Intervals have carefully blended their styles and influences with attention to detail and with the hard edge and melodic edges that pop up throughout their album; it’s delivered with a style and grace of many peers and forefathers of the progressive genre but with a good dose of modern interpretation and this pleases me. The songs roll in to each other blissfully, like waves lapping the beach and with that, the mood is also set. The songs take various guises on the journey, which is nine tracks long, but gives you a fairly decent cross section of what the band are capable of and can achieve. The production is flawless and everything cuts through as it should and is an easy listen in headphones as well as through you larger music systems.

It’s a really nicely written album and has mega-riffs of all sorts throughout, but the album starts and finishes as you would expect; strong and then leaves you with that lovely after taste (insert favourite desert flavour here).

All in all, I can’t say anything bad about this album and has all the ingredients of a good, well written, tuneful, a though out and enjoyable album. My rating will reflect that and while I won’t criticize it, it didn’t “wow” me enough for full marks. If their next album is based on this and they ramp up the genius, I think that might all change.
