Description

TITLE:
Introduction to the Cellular and Molecular Biology of Cancer

Description
Synopsis

This new edition o Introduction and Molecular Biology of Cancer provides a concise yet comprehensive overview of cancer biology, covering the current status of both research and treatment. For the student or new researcher the breadth of cancer research can appear daunting, yet a broad understanding is essential for translation of laboratory findings into the clinic.
Within the broad scope of the book, each topic is reviewed authoritatively by experts in the field, and the accompanying bibliographies allow rapid access to the relevant current literature. The book covers topics extending from the molecular alterations found in cancer cells and their causes to the current range of approaches to treatment. Since the publication of the previous edition in 1997 there has been unprecedented progress in cancer research: this is reflected by an extensive revision of all the material, and the addition of eight new chapters, covering DNA repair, epigenetic events, the cell cycle, cell immortalization, apoptosis, angiogenesis, animal models, the genome, transcriptome and proteome, radiotherapy and molecular radiotherapy, immunotherapy, and gene therapy. The fourth edition of the popular book will serve as a text for both undergraduate and postgraduate use and also as an introduction for clinicians and scientists new to the field.
Annotation

The book contains black-and-white illustrations.

This book is truly what its title says it is -- a highly comprehensive, up-to-date guide to the molecular basis of carcinogenesis. It is divided into concise chapters that direct the reader through the world of cancer, from the very basics to up-to-date descriptions of signal transduction pathways. Additionally, a number of chapters describe treatments for cancer, including current immunological and monoclonal antibody-based therapies. The book was written for students, clinicians, and scientists new to the field of molecular carcinogenesis. I feel that this book truly meets these expectations and in many cases provides extra knowledge. Each chapter is written by experts in the field. The book is well illustrated with many helpful, easy to follow figures and tables. The references are appropriate and up-to-date. Additionally, this book has a very extensive glossary of terms commonly used in cancer and molecular carcinogenesis. I feel the third edition of this book is entirely necessary (the previous edition was published in 1990) as the fields of molecular biology of cancer and cancer treatments are continuously evolving and it is essential that anyone new to these fields has access to the most current concepts. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone starting out in the fields of oncology and cancer research.
