Dopo lo schianto di uno Space Shuttle sulla Terra, la psichiatra e divorziata Carol Bennell (Nicole Kidman) scopre un misterioso virus di origine aliena, che attacca gli esseri umani nel sonno, durante la fase REM. Le vittime risultano diventare inumane, prive di sentimenti ed emozioni ma mantenendo l'aspetto esteriore immutato, rendendo così difficile l'identificazione tra soggetti sani e infetti. Carol, con l'aiuto di Ben Driscoll, si mette alla ricerca di Oliver, suo figlio, che è col padre Tucker (una delle vittime). Oliver, avendo contratto l'ADEM, una malattia causata quale complicazione da varicella, è immune al virus alieno............................



While returning to Earth, the space shuttle explodes and the fragments bring an alien virus that recodes the human DNA. In Washington, the psychiatrist Carol Bennell observes the modification of the behavior of one of her clients first, then in her former husband and finally in the population in general. Together with her friend Dr. Ben Driscoll the researcher Dr. Stephen Galeano, they discover that the extraterrestrial epidemic affects human beings while sleeping and that her son Ollie, who had chickenpox when he was a baby, is immune to the disease and may save mankind from the outbreak.
