In his office, the chief postman of a French rural community puts three junior postmen through a course of intensive training. The aim is to reduce the time of their postal round so that they can catch the airmail plane on time. In the classroom, François may be the star pupil, but when he gets back to his daily round, countless obstacles prevent him from succeeding in his mission...
Although massively overshadowed by Jacques Tati’s subsequent works, L’École des facteurs merits consideration as a small comic masterpiece in its own right. Replete with visual jokes (many of which are as fresh as funny as they were when the film was made), it ought to be ranked along side the silent slapstick classics of Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton which clearly influenced Tati in making the film.
Amongst the many unforgettable comic situations, one favourite is the scene where Tati (as François the postman) gets separated from his bicycle and the latter carries on regardless, with the postman running along behind. Tati’s confrontation with a time-wasting level-crossing is equally memorable.
L’École des facteurs was such a success that Tati re-made it the following year as Jour de fête , adding additional material to make this his first full-length film.

[...] Ma bisogna aspettare ancora qualche anno prima che Tati faccia il suo esordio alla regia. Infatti solo nel 1947 avrà l'occasione di dirigere il suo primo cortometraggio, L'ècole de facteurs. Le sventure di un postino impacciato, interpretato dallo stesso regista, faranno il suo successo convincendo il produttore Fred Orain a ripetere subito l'esperimento con un lungometraggio. Nasce così Jour de fète (1947). Ciò che risulta strano è come L'ècole de facteurs e Jour de fète siano praticamente identici. Le gag che avevano divertito nella sua prima esperienza di regia, vengono riprese esattamente e riportate in un contesto più ampio e dilatato. Le disastrose vicende del postino sono inserite nel micro-sistema di una festa di paese e seguite da un ideale spettatore interno alla diegesi incarnato da una piccola e incurvata vecchina accompagnata da una capra. Un universo chiuso e felice dove ogni personaggio occupa una posizione specifica, attraverso la quale viene rispettato e riconosciuto. Anche il bonario schernire operato dagli abitanti del villaggio nei confronti del postino François fa parte di un rituale codificato, che aumenta proprio quella sensazione di equilibrio che governa tutto il film. E sarà proprio questo equilibrio a essere messo in pericolo dai semplici movimenti del portalettere.
