James Cameron’s Avatar: The Game racconta delle gesta di Ryder, un colono umano della RDA giunto sul pianeta per aiutare i suoi simili ad entrare in contatto e mediare con i nativi. Tale operazione è resa più graduale grazie all’utilizzo degli Avatar, ovvero delle perfette riproduzioni dei Na’vi all’interno delle quali viene trasferita la coscienza di alcuni soldati umani, scelti appositamente per la compatibilità del proprio DNA con questa avveniristica tecnologia. Nel corpo dei giganteschi esseri blu saremo molto più agili e forti, oltre che avremo la possibilità di entrare maggiormente in contatto con la natura ostile del pianeta, aggressiva nei confronti degli organismi estranei. I primi istanti di gioco li passeremo tra le fila dell’RDA dove verremo a contatto con le massime istituzioni del pianeta, che non ci impiegheranno molto ad affibbiarci alcuni delicati incarichi, anche per via della nostre capacità. Ryder, nonostante nasca come addetto alle comunicazioni, è un buon combattente, esperto nell’uso di molteplici armi e sufficientemente coraggioso per gettarsi nella mischia e risolvere i tanti problemi che un misterioso sabotatore sta portando all’interno della base. Si tratterà di compiti piuttosto semplici, come difendere il perimetro della base a bordo di una torretta, recuperare un soldato sperduto e spaurito o riparare alcune falle nel recinto di contenimento. Già da queste prime missioni capiremo come il mondo di Pandora sia ostile alla presenza umana e capiremo come, tra i vostri stessi compagni, serpeggi un certo malcontento per come il pianeta ed i suoi abitanti vengono sfruttati.
Questa spinosa situazione, che dovrebbe rappresentare anche il canovaccio centrale del segretissimo film, già dopo pochi istanti di gioco ci porterà a doverci schierare: sceglierete i cianotici nativi o gli aggressivi invasori?
