Get a Load of This is a 1942 book written by James Hadley Chase. Unlike most of his other books, it is not a single story throughout, but a collection of 14 different short stories. The stories are not inter related, and most have queer endings.

The book was written by Chase while he was still in the Royal Air Force and was first published in early autumn 1941, and subsequently reprinted in 1988. Initially Chase's publisher was not in favour of him writing short stories, but he wrote a letter to them with the script, and the book was accepted.

The Guilty Are Afraid is a 1957 thriller novel by James Hadley Chase. The novel is set against the background of a rich gangster ridden city on the Pacific Coast where Lew Brandon, the protagonist, looks for the killer who disposed of his partner Jack Sheppey.



When Johnny Jackson unaccountably disappears, his grandfather contacts the police for help. As they prove to be uninterested, he turns instead to Colonel Parnell of the Parnell Detective Agency. It seems at first to be a simple case of a missing person but they soon find themselves in the middle of a complicated web of deceit, intrigue and murder.

Anita must avenge his death, and she turns to Fuentes, another Cuban crook and Manuel Torres, who is known to be a man of truth... but is actually a bigger crook than Feuntes. It is no great deal that the two separate groups of crooks descend upon the Hotel and violence erupts...



James Hadley Chase gives us a tough, hard-boiled story crammed with action, grotesque situations, and weird characters. Not a word is wasted. From the first page to the last you are involved in a sinister and compelling situation, that will hurtle you forward with the speed of an express train.
