Album Review

Continuing in 2014's fine vein of dark albums – from Lana Del Rey to Beck, Coldplay to Lykke Li – comes the debut from Herd member Jane Tyrrell, who may've just trumped that whole sadsack bunch. Echoes in the Aviary is a beautiful kind of agony – from the Kid A-like production of the title track to the trip-hop textures that underscore "Ships". Powerful and effortless, Tyrrell's voice is the hero – but production from the likes Dustin McLean (Axolotl), Pip Norman (Sparkadia), J Walker (Machine Translations) and members of PVT is more than just colour. Electronic yet organic, multi-layered yet deceptively sparse, it's the rich architecture that underpins the house Jane finally built.
