Melodic modes in Indian Classical Music are known as Ragas. A Raga is a series of five or more musical notes upon which a melody is founded. It is observed that a Raga, when played or sung, sounds most effective aurally and emotionally only at a certain time of the day or night. The most plausible reason for this could be that the frequencies of musical notes of the Raga are in harmony with, and therefore are enhanced by Nature, at that particular time of day or night. Therefore, every Raga is allocated a time slot within the 24 hour time frame. To facilitate this classificatin, 8 Prahars come into the picture. This does not mean that a Raga "must not" be sung or played at a time other than is prescribed Prahar. All it means is that the performed Raga will sound best during its prescribed Prahar. "Prahar" means a time-division. "Prahar" means flow. "Prahar Pravaah" means the incessant flow of time from one time-division to another within the 24-hour cycle. Sharing Widget |
