And the wind screams Mary. Will the wind ever remember The names it has blown in the past, And with this crutch, its old age and its wisdom It whispers, "No, this will be the last." For Mary S. N.W. IN - Your Beautiful Red Hair turned to Gold "The Wind Cries Mary" is a song written by Jimi Hendrix and released by the Jimi Hendrix Experience as the band's third single on May 5, 1967. It reached no. 6 in the UK Charts. The track is an example of psychedelic blues-rock, as the song is in the key of F major, with a guitar solo primarily involving the F major pentatonic scale. Today, it is number 379 on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 greatest songs of all time.In the United States, the song was first released as the b-side to the "Purple Haze" single in June 1967 and later appeared on the August 1967 American version of the album Are You Experienced, where three tracks were deleted from the British LP version to make way for the band's three singles that had been issued in the United Kingdom. The song was recorded at the end of the "Fire" sessions. It is said to have been inspired when Hendrix and his then girlfriend, Kathy Etchingham, had an argument over her cooking; after she stormed out of their apartment; Hendrix wrote "The Wind Cries Mary", as Mary was Etchingham's middle name. Billy Cox, who was the bassist for the Band of Gypsys and long-time friend of Hendrix has cited Curtis Mayfield's influence on the song: "'The Wind Cries Mary' was a riff that was influenced by Curtis Mayfield, who was a big influence for Jimi." Lyrics "The Wind Cries Mary" After all the jacks are in their boxes, and the clowns have all gone to bed, you can hear happiness staggering on down the street, footprints dress in red. And the wind whispers Mary. A broom is drearily sweeping up the broken pieces of yesterday's life. Somewhere a Queen is weeping, somewhere a King has no wife. And the wind it cries Mary. The traffic lights they turn blue tomorrow And shine their emptiness down on my bed, The tiny island sags downstream 'Cos the life that they lived is dead. And the wind screams Mary. Will the wind ever remember The names it has blown in the past, And with this crutch, its old age and its wisdom It whispers, "No, this will be the last." And The Wind Cries Mary.
