Julian of Norwich (c. 1343-c. 1416) is the earliest known English woman writer. A contemporary of Geoffrey Chaucer, Margery Kempe, William Langland, and John Wyclif, she is now widely recognized as one of the great speculative theologians of the Middle Ages and her thinking about God as love has made a permanent contribution to traditional Christian belief. Nevertheless, people usually read only exerpt translations of her works rather than the originals in Middle English. Watson and Jenkins attempt to rectify this situation in a scholarly edition of A Vision Showed to a Devout Woman and A Revelation of Love. Their introduction discusses Julian’s life, early reputation, and the overall reception of her works. It also includes a detailed explanation of and guide to using this edition. Worthy of inclusion on any Medievalist's shelf.
