Plot :

After claiming he is an extraterrestrial from the planet 'K-PAX', 1,000 light years away in the Lyra constellation, prot (uncapitalized and rhyming with "goat") is committed to the Psychiatric Institute of Manhattan. There, psychiatrist Dr. Mark Powell attempts to cure him of his apparent delusions. However, prot is unwavering in his ability to provide cogent answers to questions about himself, K-PAX and its civilization. Dr. Powell introduces him to a group of astrophysicists, to whom prot displays a level of knowledge that puzzles them.
Prot also exhibits considerable influence over the other patients at the Institute, each of whom believes unquestioningly that he is indeed from K-PAX. Prot, who claims to have journeyed to Earth by means of "light-travel", has explained that he can take one person with him when he instantaneously returns. Thereafter most of the patients at the institute ask to be taken to K-PAX.
Upon learning that many of his patients expect to leave Earth on...

Trama :

Prot viene rinchiuso in una clinica psichiatrica di Manhattan poiché afferma di venire da K-PAX, un pianeta situato nella costellazione della Lira. Insensibile agli psicofarmaci, viene trasferito in una prestigiosa clinica di Manhattan, per essere curato dal rinomato dottor Powell. Lo psichiatra è incuriosito dal comportamento estremamente convincente di Prot e lo sottopone sia ad esami fisici, che dimostrano la capacità di Prot di vedere i raggi ultravioletti, solitamente non captabili dall'occhio umano, sia a test di tipo "astronomico", che dimostrano la sua non comune conoscenza delle leggi del cosmo.
Inoltre, Prot esercita una notevole influenza su tutti gli altri rinchiusi nella clinica, affermando che il primo dei tre compiti per guarire, è di vedere il cosiddetto "uccello azzurro", un bizzarro volatile del medesimo colore. Prot assicura inoltre ai pazienti della clinica che lui potrà portare uno solo di loro, su K-Pax. Powell decide quindi di proporre alcuni test di natura astronomica a Prot dietro suggerimento del cognato. Prot completa tranquillamente i test e una prova con alcuni dei più importanti astrofisici del paese, al punto da proporre una nuova teoria...
