The four multi-instrumentalists (who sing in English) met at music college in Oslo in 2007 and began mixing up country, pop, rock and Balkan folk with an appealing piratical spirit. They’ve built a wide European fanbase with raucous gigs at which they brandishing balalaikas, trumpets and glockenspiels as punter wave their tankards aloft and the strong set of more commercial hooks on their third album make them look set for well-stomping success at festivals this summer. Rockland opens with a jolly sea shanty called Old de Spain on which a woman rebels against a guy who “ran my life mankin style” and leaving his ship in flames. There are gutsy hoe-downs like Bad Girl and pretty daisy-chain weaver’s tunes like Lady Grey. The wonderfully absurd Oh My God marries a prowling, punk bassline to an eccentric account of a Beta Baby stalked my a policeman, complete with references to Breaking Bad, First Aid Kit and Hello Kitty. “He´s walking ´round just like a snuffleuphagus.....gonna put me in emo prison.” Delightfully daft.
