Plot:

When Juliette marries Jean, she comes to live on his ship, on board of which are, besides the two of them, only a cabin boy and the strange old second mate Pere Jules. Soon bored by life on the river, she slips off to see the nightlife when they come to Paris. Angered by this, Jean sets off, leaving Juliette behind. Overcome by grief and longing for his wife, Jean falls into a depression and Pere Jules goes and tries to find Juliette.

In una cittadina francese, il marinaio Jean, che gestisce l'Atalante, una chiatta fluviale da trasporto, sposa Juliette, una ragazza di campagna mai uscita prima dal suo paese.

La chiatta a motore diventa subito la casa dei novelli sposi, che trascorrono le giornate in compagnia di Jules, un anziano marinaio che ha girato il mondo, di un ragazzo che li aiuta come mozzo e di una famigliola di gatti.

La vita matrimoniale è inizialmente gradevole: Jean e Juliette non perdono occasione per scambiarsi effusioni, e il vecchio Jules, burbero dal cuore tenero col quale Juliette stringe presto amicizia, la incanta con le sue storie d'avventura e la sua collezione di strampalati souvenir.

Ben presto, però, la ragazza comincia a sentirsi a disagio in quell'angusto spazio galleggiante, limitata da una vita semplice il cui itinerario è fissato dagli ordini della Compagnia, e la cui monotonia è rotta solo dagli scali.

Giunti in prossimità di Parigi, Juliette chiede al marito di fare un giro nella romantica città, ma qualcosa (anche a causa del vecchio Jules) va storto, e non vi riesce.
