This wonderful rural smalltown romantic comedy is from the early part of Dino Risi's long career, and it feels like a film of the generation before him. It is obviously very different from the comedies of the '60s and '70s, in which Risi excelled in holding up a mirror to the times with a satiric smile. The film was based on a novel by Pasquale Festa Campanile, and Risi had a star-studded cast at his disposal: Peppino De Filioppo, Sylva Koscina, Renato Salvatori, Paolo Stoppa, Tina Pica and Renato Rascel.

Trama:

Raffaele (Renato Salvatori), uno studente fuorisede a Napoli, è costretto a ritornare nel suo paese natale (Pollena) perché la sua amata nonna (Sabella, appunto, interpretata da Tina Pica) è morente. Sconvolto dalla notizia Raffaele si reca subito a casa della moribonda, qui ritrova il paese addolorato per le condizioni di nonna Sabella. Tutti tranne l'ormai matura sorella di Sabella (Dolores Palumbo) e l'ufficiale postale Emilio (Peppino De Filippo), fidanzati da vent'anni, che non hanno potuto realizzare il loro sogno d'amore per l'ostinata opposizione da parte della nonnina. Ma nessuno aveva fatto i conti con l'arzilla vecchietta, che all'arrivo del nipote guarisce improvvisamente e svela i suoi piani, cioè quelli di far tornare al paese il nipote e costringerlo a fidanzarsi con Evelina, figlia di un facoltoso proprietario terriero.
