Insieme con un gruppetto di italiani, Vincenzo emigra in Olanda per lavorare in una miniera di carbone. La sua prima esperienza è drammatica: imprigionato nelle viscere della terra da un crollo improvviso, viene tratto in salvo quando ogni speranza sembra svanita. Deciso a ritornarsene a casa, Vincenzo accetta di passare il suo ultimo fine settimana in Olanda assieme a Federico, un altro italiano che lavora in miniera. Ad Amsterdam Federico è di casa nella 'strada delle vetrine', dove le prostitute si offrono agli occhi dei passanti. Esortato dall'amico, anche Vincenzo comincia a frequentare l'ambiente. Lo colpisce la bellezza di Els, e a poco a poco tra i due nasce un tenero sentimento, forse preludio del vero amore. Els per la priima volta si sente rispettata e Vincenzo dal canto suo è incerto e combattuto tra l'amore per la giovane e il desiderio di tornare in Italia.



Deux émigrés, mineurs de fond aux Pays-Bas, s'offrent un week-end à Amsterdam. Vincenzo s'amourache d'une fille « dans la vitrine ».



A romantic drama partially set in Amsterdam, this standard tale starts out in a mining area in Holland where conditions are about as rough as they get. Two of the miners, Italians Federico (Lino Ventura) and Vincenzo (Bernard Fresson) take off together for the city's red-light district, where the women pose in windows for prospective customers. There the duo meet Else (Marina Vlady) and Carrel (Magali Noel) who are willing to leave their windows to spend a weekend at a resort with the two men. Soon Else has fallen in love with Vincenzo and the future of the two hookers, as well as the miners, seems to look brighter.
