Adriana è una ragazza bella, ma povera, cui la madre trova un lavoro come modella di un pittore con la segreta speranza di avviarla, in seguito, a una più lucrosa e facile carriera. Un giorno essa si innamora di un autista che dichiara subito di volerla sposare. Adriana crede a quelle promesse e nell'attesa di vederle attuate, diventa l'amante del fidanzato. Ma questi non tarda a rivelarsi un marito con prole; Adriana, allora, disgustata e delusa, finisce per darsi alla prostituzione. Una sera si imbatte in un giovanotto, Gino, di cui si innamora appassionatamente. Gino, pero', ha altre preoccupazioni, oltre l'amore. Fa parte di un gruppo politico clandestino (siamo in Italia, sotto il fascismo) e le cospirazioni occupano gran parte del suo tempo...



Even though the novel is about a prostitute, an intellectual who loses his commitment and his belief in everything, and a Fascist officer, the novel still presents compelling insights about the individual and the society and what links them together. And also about their respective responsibilities.
