A handsome stranger rides into Candleford at the start of the new series. As it happens, he's not a stranger after all, he's James Dowland (Jason Merrells), a Lark Rise boy made good who's arrived from London to open Candleford's first hotel. The town's ladies are all of a-twitter, with Dorcas (Julia Sawalha) turning her industrial-strength simpering all the way up to 11. The two go way back and we are left feeling that he is a potential love-interest for the twee guardian of the post office. But Dorcas, for the moment, has other things on her mind, namely a half-baked new housemaid called Minnie. It's another bucketload of bucolic whimsy where the sun always shines, the grass is always green and where everything always turns out well in the end, even if there are a few tears along the way. Resistance is futile, so sit back and enjoy.
