THE LATE SHOW (1977) - Widescreen

Writer/Director Robert Benton’s sweet hearted, perfectly paced, beautifully performed, contemporary Noir about sickly, down-on-his-luck LA gumshoe, Ira Welles (Art Carney), trying to survive a sleazy, and possibly deadly, new case, along with the changing times - all while retaining what’s left of both his dignity, and waning friendships.

Funny, ironic, occasionally jarring, surprisingly touching, always supremely entertaining, this is one highly overlooked GEM of a film which absolutely should be seen by all lovers of the genre.

Great writing by Benton (Kramer vs Kramer, The Human Stain), atomspheric score from Kenneth Wanberg, and a bevy of dedicated character actors including Bill Macy, Eugene Roche, Ruth Nelson, Lily Tomlin, John Consadine, Joanna Cassidy and Howard Duff, make this easily one of the most original and lovingly directed detective pictures of ‘recent’ times. All produced by legendary film maker Robert Altman.

I’m really happy to share the best print I can find of ‘The Late Show’, a totally gorgeous picture that, for whatever reason, just doesn't appear to be out there in torrent land (and hardly anywhere else, comparatively) - which is a terrible shame.

I sincerely hope you enjoy this film, and respectfully ask you help make sure it doesn’t get forgotten, by seeding it hard, buying from wherever you can find it, and maybe even lobbying the studio for a quality restoration. Thank you.
