Toronto’s electro-hop DJ/production duo Let’s Go To War are the newest vessel to be seen riding the wave of electro-hop that has been causing devastation across the music world like a tsunami in the past year.Until now I hadn't realised it was humanly possible to find such an eclectic mix of genres in one album! Reggae, blues, hip-hop, break beat, pop, electro; the list really does go on. It was only recently, upon listening to Let's Go To War for the first time, that I heard this truly unique sound. Yes that's right; the long awaited debut album from the Canadian band has finally arrived! The group, who have already produced songs for the likes of Fefe Dobson, D.O.E...and erm.... Britney Spears, are currently signed to Last Gang Records, home of fellow electro band Crystal Castles.
The album is full of imaginatively constructed synth-pop melodies, accompanied by the rugged vocals of the boys and drum beats vaguely reminiscent of early M.I.A tracks. The first song on the album, 'Burn Down the Disco', has got chart topping single written all over it; from its minimalistic vocals to its hardcore bassline, it is a sheer masterpiece. Similarly, the fourth track on the album, aptly named 'Internet Pornstar' is certainly destined to be one of the songs to watch out for this year, capturing the atmosphere of the reggae club scene in 3 minutes and 50 seconds worth of song. These are later followed by the more stripped back and honest 'Maybelline' which portrays a meaningful story of relationship woes behind beautiful lyrics; the slow pace of the song paired with the almost angelic sound of the strings, gives a sincere and frank end to the album.
